  • Best time to go: from June to September for hiking, open alpine huts and mountain lakes; from December to March for skiing and snow; in autumn for foliage, village festivals and a quieter atmosphere in the towns.
  • Where to stay: farmhouses and mountain farms on the valley floor if you want services and easy connections, or more secluded properties for those seeking silence, views of the peaks and perhaps a spa or indoor pool.
  • Getting around: a car is often the most practical choice to move between valleys and passes; in many areas buses, ski buses and seasonal shuttles run in summer and winter, while bikes and e-bikes are ideal for valley cycle paths.
