Those who want to open a farmhouse in Valle d’Aosta have to follow the Regional Law 29 of 4 December 2006.

This bill provides, first, that any person who intends to open a farmhouse must subscribe to the list of regional farmhouse operators.

The facilities for receiving guests must be located within the estate, and, with regard to accommodation, the maximum number of beds should be 16 in the case of rooms with breakfast service, half board, and full board. The maximum number of seats at the restaurant should be of 60 units: if the business is carried out for a maximum period of 120 days per year, that number may rise to 80.

At the time of the application for the opening of the company, the aspiring owner must submit documentation of full compliance with the sanitary regulations. As for the administration of food and beverage produced in the pastures, the aspiring entrepreneur is required to reserve an appropriate space for the preparation of these products before giving them to the customer.

To ensure the highest promotion of local products, a quality label for farmhouses in Valle d’Aosta has been introduced: assignment and maintenance are regulated by the regional council.
