To open a farmhouse in Trentino Alto Adige it is necessary to conform to the terms of two provincial laws. These are two separate regulations, one for the province of Trento, and one for the province of Bolzano.

The opening of farmhouse activities in the province of Trento is regulated by the Provincial Law 10 of December 19, 2001, while the province of Bolzano, follows the Provincial Law of September 19, 2008.
To start the business it is necessary for the aspiring entrepreneur to enter the list of regional farmhouse operators, and to present a petition to the Municipality where the farmhouse is located, outlining the main features of the project that is about to be started. As for the accommodation capacity, the legislation provides for a maximum of 30 beds, located in a number of not more than 15 rooms.
The employer must also ensure the prevalence of farming over the hosting activity, and the latter must not be in any way an impediment for the progress of the former. The administration of food and beverage (typical products of the estate or produced by neighbours) can not exceed 60 seats. The specific case of this region also includes a regulation for the farmhouse in pastures (malga): the facility must have a toilet for every 15 guests, a kitchen at least 25 meters wide, if more than 20 lunches or dinners are served daily. To open the facility, the applicant has to provide medical records, and documents relating to the compliance of the farmhouse with sanitary rules.
