The Stops
CITTÀ DI CASTELLO Strategically situated in the Upper Valtiberina, Città di Castello borders with the provinces of Pesaro, Urbino and Arezzo. The Civic Tower, called by the inhabitants "Bishop's Tower", now pending, had a twin, located a few meters away, demolished long ago. Many events animate the city-life during the year. PERUGIA Capital city, it is a cultural and economic hub of the region. With Etruscan origins, it became a free commune in the XII century. The archaeological sites with Etruscan ruins are very interesting, as well as the monumental Palace of Priors and the entire old town. ASSISI AND SPELLO Set on the western side of Mount Subasio, Assisi is strongly linked to the patron saint of Italy St. Francis who was born and lived there. Some religious buildings are spectacular examples of XII century art. Spello, celebrated for the extra virgin olive oil produced there, is a small village near Mount Subasio, ranked among the "most beautiful villages in Italy". SPOLETO Founded in Roman times, it became duchy with the arrival of the Longobards; sought-after by Empire and the Papacy, Spoleto was later part of the Papal States. TERNI Known also as the "City of Lovers": St. Valentine was bishop, and his remains are kept there. Among the historic and religious buildings, like the beautiful church of St. Francis, you can find several monuments of industrial archeology. TODI This charming town is situated on the top of a hill overlooking the middle valley of the River Tevere. It is an ancient Etruscan city, but during the Middle Ages it was a free commune and then 'signoria'. Some religious and civic valuable buildings embellish the historic center, particularly those overlooking Piazza del Popolo.
