For over one century it has been true to its farming vocation: farmhouse La Badessa is a silent oasis in the heart of Salento, perfect in order to enjoy the natural beauties and the scents of this wonderful land, among citrus trees, olive trees and beaches. Let’s discover it with Mrs. Francesca.

How did you farmhouse originate?
The manor farm dates back to the first years of the 14th century, and at first it belonged to some rich Frenchmen, and was then a nunnery – from here its name “La Badessa” (the abbess) derives – and for one hundred years it has belonged to our family, with Emilian origins. In the beginning the estate was thrice larger than now, but then it was split into three parts by my great grandfather among his three sons: my grndfather was the only one who preserved the estate. Ten years ago it was turned into a farmhouse through the global restoration of the dwellings of the farmers, from which the apartments have been created, and of the storehouse, which now hosts the restaurant.

Which products can be tasted at your farmhouse?
We have an olive tree grove and there is an oil mill nearby, where we produce our olive oil, which can be bought here, and citrus fruits we produce mostly for their beauty and for keeping alive the memory of my grandfather rather than for their economic value; we use them for jam and fresh juices.

Do you have any proposals for this summer?
We have already reached the sold out for the summer! Probably we will put forward some offers for September, a month that can be ideal in order to enjoy Salento, thanks to cheaper prices and lower traffic and chaos on beaches.

Which activities can be carried out?
It is possible to attend a kitesurfing course on an equipped beach nearby – I play this sport too – and take long walks on the estate, at Rauccio park and in a wildlife reserve not far from here. Our farmhouse is very quiet, and it is perfect to spend peaceful moments, by listening only to the sounds of nature, far from chaos. We also have a museum where the agricultural tools of the past and the souvenirs of our family.

Which aspect of your job do you love the most?
The contact with our customers and knowing that my job can make someone happy during the holidays.

How do you like to spend your holidays?
Undoubtedly at the seaside, since I am from Salento!
