How we rank properties

Farm stays in Sicily range from citrus estates on the eastern plain to wine domaines on the slopes of Etna and inland grain farms that have worked the same land since Greek settlement. The island is large enough that the farming — and the cooking that follows from it — changes completely from one coast to the other.

The main areas

Around Etna, farms sit on black volcanic soil at altitude, producing Nerello Mascalese wine, pistachios at Bronte and apples and chestnuts higher up; summer nights are cool here even when the coast is stifling. The Val di Noto in the south-east combines baroque towns — Noto, Modica, Ragusa — with almond groves and quiet beaches. The west, around Trapani and Marsala, is a landscape of salt pans, vineyards and Arab-Norman heritage, with Erice above it. The interior around Enna and Caltanissetta is the least visited and the cheapest, all wheat and open sky.

What the farms offer

Citrus picked from the property between December and April, when the groves are in fruit
Etna wines, Marsala and Passito di Pantelleria tasted where they are made
Ricotta, pecorino and cannoli filled to order at farms with their own flock
Almonds, pistachios and capers as farm produce rather than souvenirs
Guided walks on Etna's lava flows and craters, arranged directly by many hosts

When to go

April, May, September and October are the strongest months: warm, green in spring, and with the sea still swimmable in autumn. Midsummer inland regularly passes 38°C, so if you travel in July or August choose the coast or the higher ground around Etna. Winter is mild on the coast and is the season for oranges and lemons, though some farms close.

Catania and Palermo airports serve most of the island, with Trapani and Comiso useful for the west and south-east. Roads are slower than the map suggests once you leave the motorway, and a car is necessary — very few farms are reachable by public transport.

In Sicily we have 206 farmhouses, including 125 with swimming pool, 139 with restaurant and 70 pet friendly.

Farm stays with a wellness centre and spa let you relax while staying close to nature. Sauna, Turkish bath, massages and more: contact your agriturismo to learn about the treatments available for your stay.

Frequently asked questions about Sicily

How many agriturismi are there in Sicily, and how are they distributed?

Sicily has 206 active agriturismo structures. The province with the highest concentration is Catania with 45 agriturismi, followed by Trapani (30), Syracuse (28), Messina (27) and Ragusa (23). The offer covers both coastal areas and the hilly and mountainous interior.

Which are the best areas for a farm-stay holiday in Sicily?

The areas with the greatest concentration of structures and rural character are the Etna Park, the Val di Noto, the Vallo di Mazara, northern Sicily and southern Sicily. The Etna Park offers volcanic landscapes and high-altitude vineyards; the Val di Noto combines the Iblean countryside with Baroque architecture; the Vallo di Mazara stands out for olive groves and alberello-trained vines.

What food is served at Sicilian agriturismi?

The cuisine of Sicilian agriturismi is based on certified local products: Val di Mazara and Valli Trapanesi DOP extra virgin olive oil, Etna, Nero d'Avola and Marsala DOC wines, and cheeses such as Pecorino Siciliano DOP and Vastedda della Valle del Belìce DOP. Frequent dishes include pasta with sardines, caponata, arancini and desserts made with almonds and Bronte DOP pistachio.

When is the best time to visit an agriturismo in Sicily?

The optimal period runs from April to June and from September to October: mild temperatures, green or harvest-ready countryside, lower crowds than in summer. The Etna grape harvest is concentrated between September and October. July and August remain lively but hotter and more expensive. Winter suits stays in the interior, with ripening citrus and less crowded landscapes.

What services do agriturismi in Sicily offer?

Among the most common services are a swimming pool, a restaurant with its own kitchen, wine and oil tastings on the estate, pet-friendly hospitality and an educational farm. Some structures offer wellness trails and certified organic status. On Agriturismi.it you can filter Sicilian structures by specific service, so as to select only those that match your needs.

What experiences can you have at a Sicilian agriturismo?

Activities vary by area: excursions on the craters of the Etna Park, hiking in the Iblean Mountains, tastings of native wines such as Nerello Mascalese, olive and citrus harvesting, and traditional cooking workshops. On the coast, some structures offer access to coves or organise boat trips. The network of UNESCO sites in the Val di Noto is easily reached from several agriturismi in the area.
