In a wonderful panoramic position, in the heart of Mounts Iblei, just a few kilometers from Siracusa and from the baroque gem of Noto, the Farmhouse Fattoria Terra e Libertà rises. Mrs. Arianna accompanies us among the simple and savoury tastes of Sicilian cuisine, through a warm and authentic welcome at the discovery of the wonders of this land.
Your Farmouhose is first of all a “Farm”.
We have a farm with different animals, such as pigs, dairy cows, goats, rabbits, little donkeys, a henhouse and even two Tibetan goats! We use milk for pecorino and caprino cheese, and we produce and serve meat.
What is the didactic farm?
It is a real farm and we propose different itineraries and theme-days for elementary and junior high schools. For instance there is the “way of the vegetable garden” to prepare the sowing of vegetables, at the discovery of our organic garden, and again, the “way of milk” and the “way of bread”. The last time a class from infant school was here to prepare the vegetable garden: we gave children small shovels and rakes, seeds and plants, which at the end they warered, thus experiencing the entire process. The day ends with a visit to the animals and the farm, and the lunch together.
Which other activities is it possible to carry out?
It is a huge estate, and it is possible to walk freely in the greenery, among citrus trees and almond trees. We have a swimming-pool with a solarium, a tennis court, some mountain-bikes, a bowl court and a small playground. Our restaurant is open on Sundays and on holidays, and on the occasion of celebrations: for Sunday lunch we offer a typical country menu, homemade pasta, pizzas made by our cook, and we produce and sell extra virgin olive oil.
What do you love the most of your territory?
Sicily is a very rich land, whose artistic and cultural heritage is unequalled, and the area of Siracusa is between the coast and the hills, with a wide variety of landscapes: on fine days it is possible to see even the Etna volcano. Our strong point is exactly this open view toward the Iblei plateau, the port of Siracusa and the Mediterranean bush, with almond trees and prickly pears, for those who want to find a patch of heaven in Sicily. There is also a picturesque side, and my brother Arturo is authentic, a real farmer, who wants to spread the richness of our heritage, in fact we are deeply rooted in our land.
How has your farm house originated?
We opened in 2001: the estate belonged to our family, and my brother Arturo had this dream, and was fond of nature and the countryside. The farm was therefore accompanied by a hosting facility, but the managing is still familiar: beside my brother, our staff is made of our cook Daniela and her husband, the handyman for upkeep and the garden, my father, who supervises when he can, and a couple who has worked with us for years, while a folk musician entertains our guests with some typical Sicilian music. I deal with marketing and the online questions linked to our website.
What is your greatest satisfaction?
We defend our identity, people here find a homely atmosphere, and thanks to word of mouth we have been able to become well-known. We have filled four guest-books with compliments: people have appreciated our authenticity and want to come back for the familiar atmosphere: Our greatest satisfaction is exactly to see our guests coming back over the years, also from abroad.
