Agriturismo in Calabria with Restaurant, Riding

Farm stays in Calabria offer the longest coastline in mainland Italy and, immediately behind it, three mountain ranges. Prices here are the lowest in the country for this kind of stay, and the farms are almost entirely aimed at Italian visitors rather than international ones.

Where to base yourself

The Tyrrhenian side, around Tropea and Capo Vaticano, has the clearest water and the famous red onions grown on the terraces above the sea. The Sila plateau, in the centre, is high pine and beech forest with lakes, cattle and cool summers — it does not feel southern at all. The Pollino, on the Basilicata border, is Italy's largest national park, with Arbëreshë villages founded by Albanian refugees five centuries ago. The Ionian side around Locride is drier, with bergamot groves found almost nowhere else on earth.

What these farms produce

  • Bergamot, grown almost exclusively on this coast, and its oil and preserves
  • Tropea onions, 'nduja and chilli — the backbone of Calabrian cooking
  • Caciocavallo silano and pecorino from the Sila herds
  • Citrus, figs and olives from smallholdings that sell direct
  • Beaches within half an hour of most coastal-hill farms, at inland prices

Timing and access

May, June, September and early October are ideal, with sea temperatures holding well into autumn. July and August are hot and Italian families fill the coast. The Sila works as a summer refuge and has modest skiing in winter. Many coastal farms close between November and March.

Lamezia Terme is the main airport, with some direct European flights; the drive from Naples is around four hours. Roads improve constantly but mountain routes remain slow, and a car is essential everywhere.

Frequently asked questions about Calabria

How many agriturismi are there in Calabria, and where are they concentrated?
Calabria has 75 active agriturismi. The province with the greatest offer is Cosenza with 30 structures, followed by Catanzaro (21), Vibo Valentia (11), Reggio Calabria (10) and Crotone (3). The highest concentration is found in the inland and hilly areas, where traditional agriculture is still central.
Which areas of Calabria are best for a farm-stay holiday?
The areas with the highest density of structures and scenic interest are the Sila National Park, with conifer woods and plateaus above 1,000 metres, the Pollino National Park, home to some of the most intact forests in southern Italy, and the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts, with olive groves and vineyards a few kilometres from the sea.
What are the typical products and cuisine of Calabrian agriturismi?
Calabrian cuisine is built on ingredients with a strong identity: 'nduja from Spilinga, Tropea PGI red onion, Calabrian chilli pepper, Liquirizia di Calabria DOP liquorice and Crotonese DOP pecorino. The reference wines are Cirò DOC and Greco di Bianco DOC. Many agriturismi produce extra virgin olive oil and offer it for tasting; Calabria's olive oil DOPs are Bruzio, Lametia and Alto Crotonese.
When is the best time to stay at an agriturismo in Calabria?
Spring, between April and June, suits hikes in the Pollino National Park and the Sila National Park, with blossoms and mild temperatures. Summer is high season on the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts. Autumn, between September and October, coincides with the grape harvest, the olive harvest and preserve-making, times when many structures open their production activities to guests.
What services do agriturismi in Calabria offer?
The offer varies considerably from one structure to another. Among the most common services are a restaurant with its own kitchen, a swimming pool, pet-friendly hospitality and activities for families with children. Some structures have an educational farm or produce under a certified organic regime. The search filter on Agriturismi.it lets you select structures by individual service.
What can you do during a farm stay in Calabria?
Activities depend on the area. In the Sila National Park and the Pollino National Park there are trails for hiking and mountain biking, with the chance of wildlife sighting. Along the coast the sea combines with olive-oil culture. Many agriturismi organise Calabrian cooking classes, tastings of Cirò DOC wine and workshops on processing local products such as 'nduja.
