In 1165, Carpena was one of the most important centers in Val di Vara, home to a podestà (governor) with jurisdiction over a vast area, including La Spezia (then known as "Borgus Spedie") and part of Cinque Terre.

The secular heritage of this region is still evident today in the names of the surrounding villages: Codeglia, Porcale, Castè, Vergassola, Cozzano, Torracca, all linked to families who have lived here for centuries and continue to preserve their memory.
