Agriturismo in Abruzzo with Spa, Typical Cuisine

Farm stays in Abruzzo sit in the most heavily protected region in Italy — roughly a third of its territory is national or regional park. The Apennines reach their highest point here at the Gran Sasso, and brown bears and wolves still live in the Abruzzo National Park.

Where to base yourself

The Gran Sasso and the Campo Imperatore plateau, above L'Aquila, give high pasture, sheep farming and a landscape closer to central Asia than to the Mediterranean. The Majella, further south, is wilder still, with deep gorges and hermitages cut into rock. Around Sulmona the valleys are broad and warm, known for red garlic and sugared almonds. The Trabocchi coast, south of Pescara, has small beaches beneath cliffs and the timber fishing platforms that give it its name.

What these farms offer

  • Pecorino and ricotta from mountain flocks, still moved to high pasture in summer
  • Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano from the hills between mountains and sea
  • Saffron from the Navelli plain, one of the most valued crops in Italy
  • Arrosticini — skewered mutton grilled over coals — as the standard farm dinner
  • Walking, riding and, in winter, skiing at Roccaraso and Campo Felice

Timing and access

Late spring and early autumn are best for the mountains, when the pastures are in flower or the beech woods are turning. Summer is warm on the coast and pleasantly cool above 1,000 metres. Winter brings serious snow inland; some farms close, others serve the ski areas.

Rome is around two hours by motorway, which makes Abruzzo an easy extension to a Rome trip, and Pescara has an airport. Mountain roads are good but long, and a car is necessary everywhere outside the coastal strip.

In Abruzzo we have 112 farmhouses, including 34 with swimming pool, 61 with restaurant and 55 pet friendly.

Farm stays with a wellness centre and spa let you relax while staying close to nature. Sauna, Turkish bath, massages and more: contact your agriturismo to learn about the treatments available for your stay.

Frequently asked questions about Abruzzo

How many agriturismi are there in Abruzzo, and how are they distributed?
Abruzzo has 112 active agriturismo structures. The province with the highest concentration is Pescara with 34 structures, followed by Chieti (33), L'Aquila (23) and Teramo (22). The offer covers both the Adriatic coastal strip and the inland Apennine areas, with options ranging from simple rural lodging to dining based on the estate's own produce.
Which areas are best for a farm-stay holiday in Abruzzo?
The most sought-after areas are the Gran Sasso National Park, the Majella National Park and the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, where the farm-stay offer is concentrated near trails and wildlife reserves. The Sirente-Velino Regional Park is a good choice for those seeking quiet in the hinterland. For those who prefer the sea, the Adriatic Coast and the areas of Abruzzo near the sea offer rural properties just a few kilometres from the beach.
What food is served at Abruzzo's agriturismi?
Abruzzo's farm-stay cuisine revolves around mutton arrosticini skewers, pasta alla chitarra with lamb ragù, maccheroni al ceppo and pecorino cheeses such as pecorino di Farindola. Products of excellence include L'Aquila DOP saffron, the black truffle of the Majella, Aprutino Pescarese DOP extra virgin olive oil and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC wines.
When is the best time to visit an agriturismo in Abruzzo?
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the most balanced periods: mild climate, green landscapes in spring and warm colours in autumn, truffle and saffron harvests between September and November. Summer suits the Adriatic Coast and snow-free mountain hikes. Winter works for those seeking skiing on the slopes of Roccaraso or Campo Imperatore, with many structures open even in the cold months.
What services do agriturismi in Abruzzo offer?
Services vary greatly from one structure to another. Among the most common: a restaurant with its own kitchen, a swimming pool, pet-friendly hospitality, an educational farm and family activities. Some structures practise certified organic farming or produce wine on the estate. On Agriturismi.it you can filter structures by individual service and select only those that match your needs.
What activities can you do at an agriturismo in Abruzzo?
The most popular activities depend on the area: hiking and mountain biking in the Gran Sasso National Park and the Majella National Park, wolf and Marsican bear sighting in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, wine and oil tastings in the cellars of the Teramo and Pescara areas. In summer there are also horseback excursions and wild-herb gathering; in winter, alpine and cross-country skiing on the Altopiano delle Rocche.
