Umbria has one agriturismo every 6.5 square kilometres, about 2.5 square miles. The figure comes from Istat, Italy’s national statistics office, and the news agency ANSA reported it on 26 October 2026. With 15.4 farm stays per 100 km², the region has almost twice the Italian average. Agriturismi.it shows the same pattern, with one addition: by density of listed properties, Umbria ranks first in Italy. Here are the numbers, and what they mean for anyone looking for a farm stay in Umbria.
An agriturismo is a working farm authorised to host guests, with rooms, meals or tastings. Italian law requires farming to remain its main activity.
Istat’s map
In 2024 Italy had 8.7 agriturismi per 100 km². The record belongs to the autonomous province of Bolzano, in South Tyrol, with 46.3. Next comes a group of four regions with between 12 and 25.5: Tuscany, Umbria, Marche and Liguria.
| Area | Agriturismi per 100 km² | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Autonomous province of Bolzano | 46.3 | 2024 |
| Tuscany | 25.5 | 2024 |
| Province of Perugia | 17.1 | 2023 |
| Umbria | 15.4 | 2023 |
| Liguria | 13.1 | 2024 |
| Province of Terni | 10.4 | 2023 |
| Italy | 8.7 | 2024 |
The province of Perugia, at 17.1, has twice the national average. Umbria has 1,346 authorised farm stays, and counting only those that offer accommodation it ranks third in Italy, after Tuscany and Bolzano. They are everywhere: 90 of Umbria’s 92 municipalities have at least one.
Umbria ranks first on Agriturismi.it
The site lists 324 Umbrian properties out of 3,578, one in eleven. In absolute numbers only Tuscany has more, with 753. Measured against land area, though, the two swap places: Umbria has 3.8 properties per 100 km², Tuscany 3.3. Marche follows with 2.4 and Liguria with 2.3, the same regions Istat places at the top.
Almost all of them are in the province of Perugia, with 261 properties. The province of Terni has 63.
Where they are
Gubbio leads with 30 properties, and it is also the largest municipality in Umbria by area. Assisi follows with 24, Castiglione del Lago with 20 and Perugia with 17. By area, Lake Trasimeno and the countryside around Orvieto are almost level, with 53 and 52 properties. Then come the Gubbio area with 45 and the hills around Todi with 33.
Four in five have a pool
This is what sets Umbria apart. 267 properties out of 324 list a swimming pool, 82%, against 53% across the site and 71% in Tuscany.

The places are small, with 19 beds on average. Eight in ten are agriturismi in the strict sense, six in ten welcome pets and more than one in three has a restaurant.
Why Umbria
Geography comes first. According to Istat, just over half of Italy’s agriturismi are in hill country, where density is higher than in the mountains or on the plains. Umbria has no coastline and little flat land. It is a region of hills and mountains, exactly the terrain where farm stays spread most.
History matters too. Istat counts Umbria among the areas with the longest tradition of farm tourism, together with Tuscany and Bolzano. The sector started earlier here and now grows calmly: in 2024 the number of Umbrian farm stays rose by 1.1%.
For travellers the result is simple. In Umbria there is a farm stay almost everywhere, so the best approach is to pick the area first and then filter by pool, restaurant or pets allowed.
