In the Gries district of Bolzano, nestled among the vineyards, stands Schmid Oberrautner. It is the oldest family-run weingut in South Tyrol. The same family has managed it since 1363, now in its twenty-first generation. Just steps from the city's historic center, the wine estate offers welcoming ferienwohnungen and a collection of wines produced in-house. In the historic barrel-vaulted cellars, tastings and guided tours of the wine presses take place. Those who come here find vineyards just outside their windows, the opportunity to purchase wine directly, and breakfasts included with select accommodations. In Bolzano, often crowded with tourists, this is one of the few places where you can stay within the city walls yet remain surrounded by vineyard and ancient stone.
