Also called the 'desert of Accona', it begins on the southern outskirts of Siena and ends immediately after the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. In summer, splendid expanses of wheat or sunflowers, interspersed with the red patches of poppies and yellow patches of wild turnips, take on a completely different appearance immediately after threshing: 'almost African'.
