For over 1,000 years, the walls of Castello di Tornano have guarded intrigues, battles, and conspiracies, bearing witness to centuries of history in the heart of Chianti. The first mention of the "curtem" of Tornano dates back to July 790, during the 17th year of Charlemagne’s reign in Italy. Originally donated by three Lombard brothers to the Monastery of San Bartolomeo a Ripoli (Florence), the castle became a strategic stronghold over time. In 1167, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa confiscated it from Guarnellotto da Tornano for treason, granting the property to his general, Ranieri di Berelingero. Guarnellotto was infamous for his ruthlessness, as he controlled a major trade route, imposing tolls with brutal methods. Later, the castle passed to the noble Ricasoli Firidolfi family. Within its walls stood an ancient chapel, later transformed into a parish church annexed to the Pieve di San Marcellino. According to the 1427 census, the Parish of San Quirico a Tornano had 32 inhabitants, divided into five families. During the Aragonese invasions of 1453 and 1477, which devastated many castles in Chianti, Tornano remained impregnable, resisting all attacks. Today, Castello di Tornano continues to tell its long story, immersing visitors in a medieval atmosphere, where historic architecture meets the enchanting landscapes of Chianti.
