San Quirico d'Orcia is an ancient village, believed to be of Etruscan origin, located about 40 km south of Siena, on the hills that divide the valleys of the Asso and Orcia streams. Positioned along the Via Francigena, also known as the Romea, it was an essential stopping point for travellers, pilgrims and merchants making their way to Rome. Among its many notable visitors was Frederick I of Swabia, known as Frederick Barbarossa, who met here with the envoys of Pope Adrian IV on his territory. This historic encounter is relived each year through a festival, "Il Barbarossa," celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Additionally, the presence in the Municipal Library of the Italian Archive of Garden Arts—a collection of photographic and documentary material on the art of gardens—adds depth and interest to even a brief visit to the village, which opens like a blade between the houses that once lined the old Via Francigena.
