Agriturismo in Lazio with Educational Farm, Free Guest Parking

Farm stays in Lazio have one obvious advantage: Rome. Many working farms lie within an hour of the city, which makes it possible to visit the Vatican in the morning and eat food grown on the property that evening. Beyond the capital, the region is far emptier than most visitors expect.

Where to base yourself

The Castelli Romani, in volcanic hills just south-east of Rome, combine vineyards, crater lakes and papal Castel Gandolfo. North of the city, the Tuscia around Viterbo is Etruscan country — tufa towns, hot springs and Lake Bolsena — and the least expensive part of the region. The Sabina hills to the north-east produce a well-regarded olive oil. Towards Naples, the Ciociaria and the coast around Sperlonga and Gaeta offer beaches without the Amalfi prices.

What to expect on the farm

  • Sabina olive oil, from groves worked since Roman times
  • Frascati and other Castelli whites, and Cesanese, the region's red
  • Buffalo mozzarella from the southern coastal plain around Fondi
  • Artichokes, chicory and puntarelle, the vegetables Roman cooking is built on
  • Farms near stations on the Rome commuter lines, letting you visit the city without a car

Timing

Spring and autumn are ideal: Rome is comfortable and the countryside is at its best. Summer in the city is hot, which is precisely the argument for staying outside it, near a lake or on higher ground. Winter is mild and this is when farms are cheapest, with the olive harvest running from late October.

Fiumicino and Ciampino make the region easy to reach from anywhere in Europe. Suburban trains serve the Castelli, Viterbo and the coast; elsewhere, a car is needed.

In Lazio we have 165 farmhouses, including 105 with swimming pool, 88 with restaurant and 70 pet friendly.

The best educational-farm agritourism stays: animals, garden, workshops and nature for children and families, with locally sourced produce and guided activities.

Frequently asked questions about Lazio

How many agriturismi are there in Lazio, and how are they distributed?
Lazio has 165 active agriturismo structures. The province with the highest concentration is Viterbo (75 structures), followed by Rome (35), Rieti (25), Latina (20) and Frosinone (10). The Viterbo Tuscia and the surroundings of the capital offer the widest choice, with options ranging from the small family farm to the country house with a pool.
Which are the best areas for a farm-stay holiday in Lazio?
The most sought-after areas are the Tuscia, the Castelli Romani and the Alban Hills in the hinterland, Lake Bolsena and Lake Bracciano for those seeking fresh water, the Ciociaria for its Apennine landscapes and the Agro Pontino towards the Lazio Coast. Those who do not want to stray far from the capital find solid structures in the area around Rome and along the Via Francigena.
What food is served at Lazio's agriturismi, and what are the typical products?
Rural Lazio cuisine revolves around egg pasta, pulses, sheep and pork meats. Among the notable DOP and PGI products: Canino and Sabina extra virgin olive oil, Pecorino Romano, Ricotta Romana, Romanesco artichoke and Latina kiwi. Important wines are Frascati DOC, Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone and Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, produced in the Ciociaria.
When is the best time to visit an agriturismo in Lazio?
April, May and September are the most balanced months: mild temperatures, green or harvest-ready countryside, contained tourist flows. Summer suits the Lazio Coast and the lakes. Autumn, between October and November, coincides with the grape and olive harvests in the Tuscia and the Castelli Romani. Winter works for the Terminillo and the Sabine Mountains with snow.
What services do agriturismi in Lazio offer?
The offer varies greatly from one structure to another. Among the most common services: a restaurant with its own kitchen, a swimming pool, pet-friendly hospitality, an educational farm and family activities. Some structures offer certified organic status, estate wine tastings or wellness treatments. On Agriturismi.it you can filter Lazio's structures by specific service and find those that match your needs.
What activities can you do during a farm stay in Lazio?
The thermal baths of Viterbo and the Tuscia area are among the most accessible in Italy. The Sabine Mountains and the Terminillo offer hiking trails. The volcanic lakes, such as Lake Bolsena and Lake Bracciano, allow fishing and canoeing. On many farms you can take part in the seasonal harvest, attend cheese-making workshops or walk sections of the Via Francigena.
