The Ligurian coast starts at the French border, in Ventimiglia, and ends at the mouth of the Magra, near Sarzana. To the west the beaches are mostly sandy, while to the east there are cliffs and coves. Behind the sea rise terraced hills, with Taggiasca olive groves around Imperia, vineyards on dry-stone walls, basil and lemons.

To drink, Pigato and Vermentino from the Ponente, Rossese di Dolceacqua, the Cinque Terre wines and Sciacchetrà. The olive oil is Riviera Ligure DOP.

THINGS TO DO: walk the Sentiero Azzurro between the Cinque Terre villages and the trails of the Portofino Park, snorkel in the marine protected areas, cycle the Levanto–Framura cycle path, take the boat to Palmaria from Porto Venere.
