Agriturismo in Puglia

Farm stays in Puglia often mean a masseria — the fortified farmstead of the southern plains, built around a courtyard with thick whitewashed walls that once protected livestock and grain. Many still work as olive and vegetable farms, and the region produces a large share of Italy's olive oil.

Choosing your part of the region

The Valle d'Itria, between Alberobello, Locorotondo and Ostuni, is the most popular: dry-stone walls, trulli with conical roofs, and hilltop towns twenty minutes from either coast. The Salento, at the very heel, has the clearest water and the liveliest summer, with Lecce and its baroque centre inland. The Gargano promontory in the north is different again — forest, cliffs and the Tremiti islands offshore. Around Foggia the land opens into wheat plains, where farms are larger and cheaper.

What a masseria stay is like

  • Extra virgin olive oil pressed on the property, from groves that can be centuries old
  • Burrata, mozzarella and ricotta made on site at dairy farms, often in the morning
  • Courtyard architecture that keeps interiors cool without heavy air conditioning
  • Pools are common, and many farms sit within fifteen minutes of a beach
  • Vegetable-led cooking: orecchiette with turnip tops, fava purée, chicory

Timing and getting there

June and September are the sweet spot: the sea is warm, the heat is bearable, and rates sit well below August. July and August are genuinely hot and the coast fills with Italian holidaymakers, so inland masserie offer better value. Spring is green and mild but the sea is still cold. The olive harvest runs from late October into December.

Bari and Brindisi both have airports with direct European connections, and the fast train from Rome to Bari takes around four hours. Distances within Puglia are longer than they look — Gargano to Salento is a four-hour drive — so pick one area rather than trying to cover the region from a single base.

Frequently asked questions about Puglia

How many agriturismi are there in Puglia, and how are they distributed?
Puglia has 219 active agriturismo structures. The province with the highest concentration is Lecce with 76 structures, followed by Brindisi (50), Bari (39), Foggia (35), Taranto (13) and Barletta-Andria-Trani (5). The offer covers the entire region, from the masserie of Salento to the trulli of the Itria Valley and the estates of the Gargano.
Which areas of Puglia are best for a farm-stay holiday?
The areas with the highest density of structures and a distinct agricultural identity are Salento, the Itria Valley and the Murgia. The Gargano offers agriturismi set within the national park. The Gulf of Taranto and southern Puglia, with Pescoluse beach, combine an agricultural hinterland with easy access to the sea.
What food is served at Puglia's agriturismi?
The cuisine of Puglia's agriturismi revolves around orecchiette, fava beans and chicory, Altamura DOP bread, Andria burrata PGI and mozzarella. Cheeses such as Canestrato Pugliese DOP round out the menus. The most representative wines are Primitivo di Manduria DOC and Negroamaro del Salento IGT. Puglia's extra virgin olive oil, among the most produced in Italy, features in almost every structure.
When is the best time to visit an agriturismo in Puglia?
The most balanced period is September to October: mild temperatures, an active grape harvest and the olive harvest between October and November. Spring, from April to June, suits those looking for hikes and blossoms. July and August are the peak coastal months, with higher prices and reduced availability, especially in Salento and on the Gargano.
What services do agriturismi in Puglia offer?
The most common services include a swimming pool, a restaurant with its own kitchen, tastings of the estate's wine and olive oil, an educational farm and pet-friendly hospitality. Some structures also offer wellness treatments and family activities. On Agriturismi.it you can filter structures by specific service and find only those that match your needs.
What can you do during a farm stay in Puglia?
Activities vary by area. In Salento you can alternate visits to oil mills and historic masserie. In the Itria Valley you explore the trulli and the vineyards. On the Gargano you walk the trails of the national park. Across the whole region there are guided oil and wine tastings, Apulian cooking classes and bike rides among olive trees and dry-stone walls.
How much does it cost to stay at an agriturismo in Puglia?
The entry-level range starts at around 40-60 euros per person per night with breakfast. Masserie with a pool and restaurant sit between 100 and 180 euros per night per room. The most refined properties in Salento or the Itria Valley, with spa services and private suites, exceed 200 euros per night. Prices rise significantly in July and August.
