Agriturismo in Basilicata

Farm stays in Basilicata centre on Matera, whose cave districts have been inhabited for some nine thousand years, and on a landscape of clay badlands, wheat plateaus and dense forest. It is the least populated region in southern Italy and one of the least expensive.

Where to base yourself

Around Matera, farms sit on the Murgia plateau among rock churches and ravines, with the city a short drive away. To the west, the Val d'Agri and the Pollino give mountains, beech forest and villages perched on ridges. The Vulture, in the north, is an extinct volcano whose slopes produce Aglianico del Vulture, one of southern Italy's finest reds. The region has two short coasts: Maratea on the Tyrrhenian, dramatic and cliffed, and the Ionian sand near Metaponto.

Timing and access

Spring and autumn are best: Matera is unpleasantly hot in July and August, and the plateau offers little shade. Autumn brings the Aglianico harvest, which runs late, often into November. Winters are cold on the uplands and mild on the Tyrrhenian coast.

Bari airport is around an hour from Matera and is the usual arrival point; Naples is roughly two and a half hours by car. There is no useful rail service to Matera itself, and the region's interior has very limited public transport, so a car is necessary.
