Lake Como, or Lario, lies between the provinces of Como and Lecco and is shaped like an upside-down Y. Bellagio stands on the promontory where the two branches divide. The lake is surrounded by mountains, with the Val d'Intelvi to the west and the Valsassina to the east.

The farm stays on Lake Como listed on Agriturismi.it are partly on the shores, in Bellagio, Argegno and the Alto Lario between Gravedona, Peglio, Vercana and Sorico. Others are in the valleys and in Brianza. Six in ten have a restaurant and accept pets, and one in four has a wellness area. In their reviews, guests mostly mention the welcome from the hosts, the peace and quiet, the view and the breakfast.

Some properties on this page are far from the lake, in Valtellina, Valchiavenna, Valle Imagna and near Varese. To cross from one shore to the other there is the ferry between Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio.

WHERE TO STAY ON LAKE COMO: in Bellagio, near the gardens of Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni; in the Alto Lario, in Gravedona ed Uniti, Sorico and Peglio, the village 650 metres above the lake; in Argegno, where a cable car takes you up to Pigra in four minutes; in Cremeno, in the Valsassina.

WHAT TO SEE ON LAKE COMO: Villa del Balbianello, run by the FAI; Villa Carlotta, with more than 150 varieties of azaleas and works by Canova; Isola Comacina, the lake's only island; the Como–Brunate funicular, running since 1894; Piona Priory, with its cloister of 41 columns; Fort Fuentes, from 1603.

FOOD AND WINE: missoltini (dried and pressed shad), polenta uncia in the crotti cellars, Toc di Bellagio, Taleggio, Gorgonzola and Quartirolo Lombardo DOP, and Lario DOP olive oil. To drink, the Terre Lariane wines.

THINGS TO DO: walk the Greenway from Colonno to Cadenabbia, about 10 km, or the Sentiero del Viandante, about 45 km along the eastern shore; go birdwatching at Pian di Spagna; ski at Piani di Bobbio and Artavaggio; tour the lake by boat.

Farmhouses Lake Como: holidays between romantic villages, mountains and lake views

Lombardy · Shores of Lake Como between Como, Lecco and the gateway to Valtellina

Choosing a farmhouse on Lake Como means staying in one of the most scenic landscapes in Italy: calm waters surrounded by steep mountains, elegant towns such as Como, Bellagio and Varenna, historic villas with lakeside gardens and a cuisine that blends lake fish with mountain traditions. The farmhouses in the area offer cosy rooms, local products and a perfect base for boat trips and excursions.

Recommended activities

  • Boat trips and lakeside villages

Take a boat from Como or Lecco and discover Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and the other villages on the lake. Stroll along narrow alleys and promenades, visit gardens overlooking the water and stop for a drink or a meal in panoramic cafés and restaurants.

  • Hiking between peaks, pastures and viewpoints

From the lakeside towns you quickly reach trails and alpine pastures with spectacular views: routes to Monte San Primo, the Grigne or the belvederes above Menaggio are perfect if you love hiking and landscape photography.

  • Water sports and outdoor life

Besides classic boat trips, you can try kayaking, SUP, sailing and windsurfing, or choose cycle routes and scenic roads that are ideal for cycle tourism and e-bikes between lake and hills.

  • Tastings between Lake Como and Valtellina

Make the most of your stay to discover farmhouses and wineries offering alpine cheeses, artisanal cured meats, risotto with perch and Valtellina red wines served with local dishes from Lombardy and the Alps.

Practical tips

  • Best time to go: spring and early autumn are ideal to enjoy the lake with mild temperatures and fewer crowds; summer is perfect if you love outdoor life and water sports, while winter suits a quiet stay combined with cultural visits and day trips to the snow in Valtellina.
  • How to get there and get around: Lake Como is easy to reach from Milan by car or train; once you are there you can combine car, boats and public transport to move between towns, or use bikes and e-bikes to explore panoramic roads in the hills.
  • Who it is ideal for: a perfect area for couples looking for romantic views, families who want nature and outdoor activities, photography and hiking lovers and foodies, with many options also for short breaks and weekend escapes from the city.
