Farmhouses in the Dolomites: why choose a holiday in the Dolomites

The Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offer peaks over 3,000 metres, green valleys, mountain farms and small villages with breathtaking views. Choosing a farmhouse or mountain farm in the Dolomites means staying among alpine pastures, spruce forests and alpine lakes, with easy access to hiking trails, lifts and ski resorts in areas such as the Val di Fassa, Val Gardena, Alta Pusteria and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

    Well-marked trails lead to panoramic huts and alpine pastures where you can taste mountain cheeses, dumplings and local dishes after walks through woods, meadows and viewpoints over the Dolomite peaks.

  • Alpine lakes and postcard landscapes

    Lakes such as Braies, Carezza or Misurina are often reachable by car or with short walks: perfect for families, photography and easy loops through forests and meadows.

  • Skiing, snowshoeing and winter in the mountains

    In winter, the Dolomite ski areas offer slopes for skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing, as well as trails for snowshoeing, sledging and snowy panoramas, before returning in the evening to the warmth of your farmhouse.

  • Mountain villages and traditions

    Towns like Cortina d’Ampezzo, Ortisei, Canazei or San Candido combine strolls among shops, churches and old farms with markets, village festivals and museums dedicated to alpine culture.

  • Best time to go: from June to September for hiking, open alpine huts and mountain lakes; from December to March for skiing and snow; in autumn for foliage, village festivals and a quieter atmosphere in the towns.
  • Where to stay: farmhouses and mountain farms on the valley floor if you want services and easy connections, or more secluded properties for those seeking silence, views of the peaks and perhaps a spa or indoor pool.
  • Getting around: a car is often the most practical choice to move between valleys and passes; in many areas buses, ski buses and seasonal shuttles run in summer and winter, while bikes and e-bikes are ideal for valley cycle paths.
