Farm Stays in Piedmont

Farm stays in Piedmont concentrate in the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato hills south of Turin, a wine landscape listed by UNESCO where nearly every farm bottles something. This is Barolo and Barbaresco country, and also the home of the white truffle of Alba.

Where to base yourself

The Langhe around Alba, Barolo and La Morra are the heart of it: steep vineyard slopes, villages a few kilometres apart, and cellars that receive visitors year round. The Roero, just across the Tanaro, is sandier, wilder and cheaper, with hazelnut groves and eroded cliffs. Monferrato, towards Asti, is gentler and less crowded, known for Barbera and for its underground cellars. To the north, the lakes and the Alps of the Val d'Ossola offer a completely different, mountain-farming Piedmont.

Timing

Autumn is the region's peak: harvest in September, truffle fairs at Alba through October and November, and the vineyards turning red and gold. Book months ahead for that window. Spring is quiet and green, summer warm and much cheaper. Winter brings fog to the hills and many farms close.

Turin airport is under an hour from the Langhe, Milan Malpensa around two. The hills are reachable by car only in practice, and roads between villages are narrow and steep but short.
