How we rank properties

Agriturismo in Marche with Barbecue

Farm stays in Le Marche occupy a region of parallel river valleys running from the Apennines to the Adriatic, so almost any farm here is within an hour of both mountains and beach. It remains one of the least-visited parts of central Italy, and rates reflect that.

Where to base yourself

The hills behind Ancona and Jesi produce Verdicchio, Italy's most serious white wine from this coast. Further south, the Sibillini mountains rise sharply, with Sarnano and Amandola as bases for walking. Around Urbino, in the north, the landscape is Renaissance countryside almost unchanged since Piero della Francesca painted it. The Conero peninsula gives the only cliffed, cove-lined stretch of the northern Adriatic. Inland Macerata and Fermo are quiet farming country.

What to expect

  • Verdicchio and Rosso Conero from estates that bottle their own
  • Olive ascolane, ciauscolo salami and aged pecorino from the hills
  • Truffles from Acqualagna, one of Italy's main markets, from autumn onwards
  • Restored stone farmhouses, often with pools and wide valley views
  • Beaches under an hour away from most inland farms

Timing

May, June and September are the strongest months. July and August fill the coast with Italian families while the hills stay quiet and noticeably cooler. Autumn brings truffles, new oil and the grape harvest. Some higher farms in the Sibillini close in winter.

Ancona has an airport and a port with ferries to Croatia and Greece; Bologna and Rome are each around three hours by car. The coastal railway is good but the valleys inland are not served, so a car is needed for almost every farm.

In Marche we have 221 farmhouses, including 145 with swimming pool, 98 with restaurant and 121 pet friendly.

Frequently asked questions about Marche

How many agriturismi are there in Marche, and how are they distributed?
Marche has 221 certified active agriturismo structures. The province with the highest concentration is Pesaro e Urbino with 65 structures, followed by Ancona (55), Macerata (47), Ascoli Piceno (31) and Fermo (23). The offer covers the entire region, from the inland hills to the Adriatic coastal strip.
Which are the best areas for a farm-stay holiday in Marche?
The Conero offers coastal landscapes and vineyards a few kilometres from the sea. The Montefeltro, in the Pesaro hinterland, is a land of hills, medieval villages and wineries. The Metauro Valley stands out for truffle and cereal production. The Sibillini Mountains National Park is the choice for those seeking mountains and hiking. The Riviera delle Palme combines sea and countryside in the south of the region.
What food is served at Marche's agriturismi?
Marche cuisine is recognisable for its vincisgrassi (a rich baked lasagne) and Ascolana DOP stuffed olives. The prized black truffle of the Sibillini Mountains often appears on autumn menus. Among the cured meats, ciauscolo PGI and Fabriano salami stand out. The reference wines are Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC, Verdicchio di Matelica DOC and Rosso Conero DOC.
When is the best time to visit an agriturismo in Marche?
Spring and autumn are the most balanced periods: mild temperatures, green landscapes and active farming such as the grape harvest (September-October) and the olive harvest (November). Summer concentrates demand on the coast and the Conero. Winter suits the black truffle of the Sibillini and quiet stays in the hinterland, with generally lower prices.
What services do agriturismi in Marche offer?
Services vary considerably from one structure to another. Among the most common: a restaurant with its own kitchen, a swimming pool, pet-friendly hospitality, an educational farm and certified organic production. Some farms offer wine and oil tastings in the cellar. The service filter on Agriturismi.it lets you select exactly the structures that meet your specific needs.
What experiences can you have at a Marche agriturismo?
The most popular activities include hiking and mountain biking in the Sibillini Mountains National Park, tastings of Verdicchio and Rosso Conero in the cellars of the Conero and the Montefeltro, seasonal truffle gathering in the Metauro Valley, and regional cooking classes with handmade pasta. Those staying near the coast have direct access to the Adriatic beaches.
How much does it cost to stay at an agriturismo in Marche?
The entry-level range starts at around 35-50 euros per person per night, with breakfast included, in simple structures in the hinterland. Mid-level options sit between 80 and 130 euros per night for a double room. Structures with a private pool, a spa or a privileged position over the Conero often exceed 180 euros. Marche remains, overall, more affordable than the premium farm-stay regions of central Italy.
